I thought I would have little more to add about the upcoming apps for Guild Wars 2 when I blogged about them previously, but Arenanet’s blog put up a post from the lead on the Extended Experience team (do you really need a fancy name for you mobile apps team? really?) and they dumped a bunch of details worth going over.
Here’s the first interesting thing to note.
While we’ll be providing mobile and web apps for our Marketplace and Hero Viewer, along with functionality you’ve already seen in other MMOs, these are not what we refer to as extended experience components.
Sounds like they’re really digging in here. We’re talking about various and numerous apps. Auctioning, the Hero Viewer, and the chat being just the start.
If they’re talking about functionality seen in other MMOs that probably means crafting, or checking out guildies gear and their characters.
Their big brag is that they have two way functionality, like chatting with friends, and real time updates, like watching over someone in a map, noticing they have a fallen ally, stalking their every move, monitoring each event they participate in what NPCs they talk to. Additionally there seems to be some talk of wiki integration as well.
Meanwhile I’ll be disappointed if I’m not able to draw a penis on someones map at some point. Right? Because we all love that ability? Right?
They hint at later app features they’ll be working on as well. Like integration with Guild Wars and being able to tap a location on the map to deliver a ping to a friend.
All in all it sounds like they’re going all in with these web apps, and I don’t doubt that their promise to make these virtually free, aside from a small fee, will remain true. Unlike some companies releasing information today.
I have to admit I didn’t expect to be further impressed by their plans for apps, and yet I am.
